I disagree with Foto, if you do not want photograph. I offer instead, for a picture in general, image .. Spanish: imagen - LateToDinner, Sep 9, 2010

"In general" means you are assuming that there exists a word in Spanish that matches perfectly each of the 12 or more meanings of the word picture. Good luck in your search, because 12 matches is a hell of a coincidence. A picture in English can be:

  1. A visual representation
  2. A mental image
  3. A verbal description
  4. A situation
  5. A person or thing that resembles another
  6. A representative idea, thing or being
  7. A piece or art
  8. A movie (as in Hollywood)
  9. A theatrical display of actors
  10. ...

Do you realise how unlikely is it that any other language has a word with exactly those meanings? You can't normally have a translation in "general" when a word has so many meanings.

If you want to learn a language, you have to go from that language to yours, and ideally, don't even use your language at all, but never go from your language to the target one. It doesn't work like that. Each language has its own system, its own way of expressing things, its own unique way to see and feel the world, ie an idiosyncrasy.
