Las Mañanitas

Las mañanitas

Éstas son las mañanitas,

Que cantaba el rey David,

Pero no eran tan bonitas,

Como las cantan aqui.

2nd verse

Despierta, mi bien, despierta,

Mira que ya amaneció

Ya los pajarillos cantan

La luna ya se metió

Can someone translate this song for me in English? I've been singing it in spanish, but I don't know what I'm singing. Following is what the spanishdict automatic translator says:

Las Mañanitas

These are the mornings,

That King David sang,

But it was not so pretty

As sung here.

2nd verse

Awake, my love, awake

It already dawned

And the birds sing

The moon has gone away.

In Mexico (and, perhaps, other places) it is customary to serenade someone (especially girls) on the morning of their birthday with this song. There are many versions and (as margaretbl pointed out, additional verses) some of which make specific reference to birthdays (el día en que naciste).

In Jalisco, Mexico, for example the popular version is called "Mañanitas Tapatias" ('tapatia' is an adjective used to refer to anything that is 'native' to the state of Jalisco.)

Seems to me like you already did a pretty good job!

My only observation is that "mañanitas" does not mean "jacket". Rather it refers to singing very early in the morning, such as at dawn.

Probably this classic Mexican film shows the original context and meaning better than any explanation! grin

I looked up mañanitas in the dictionary and it said "birthday song." I will check out "this classic Mexican film." - Maria-Russell, Sep 9, 2010

Oh, it IS the tradional Birthday song from Mexico, as aply explained by Samdie! It just has nothing to do with jackets! :-) - Gekkosan, Sep 9, 2010
