In words like dale, dele, deme, etc. the le and me are pronouns that have been stuck onto the verb (da and dé).

Consider ayudar (to help).

The tú imperative form is ayuda. So one might say, "¡Ayúdame!" (Help me!). But the verb form is ayuda, not ayúdame, which is ayuda + me.

¡Dámelo! = Da + me + lo = Give me it

It's just how imperatives work.

Great point. I edited my post to try and show how the imperative with pronoun is formed. - --Mariana--, Sep 9, 2010

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Here is the conjugation of "dar" from the RAE.

Some command forms (imperative) are:

Da + me = Give me

Da + le = Give him/her/it

Take a look at the lessons on Imperatives to understand more about commands.

If he clicks on the link, he will need to click on the "conjugar" button. (It's the same URL, weird...javascript or something, I guess) - webdunce, Sep 9, 2010
