Perfect or Inperfect ?

Vieron (Ver) una película cómica y rieron (reírse) mucho.

or

Viean una pelicual comica y reian mucho.

I'm going for the latter as watching and smiling took some time, and was not an immediate one off event ?

But I could make a case for the past tense, they watched the film and they smiled a lot.

ok I covered my bets there.

If you fancy a bit of fun practice with the imperfect and perfect why not join in on our game - the feedback is really helpful:

GAME Preterite vs Imperfect

But in the meantime, one rule is that if you are narrating a sequence of completed actions in the past you use the preterite smile

Hope that helps.
