Is cambiarse mostly for clothes?

Yo me he cambiado, when said, is mostly understand "I have changed clothes" even though clothes are not mentioned. RIght? Although I said this the other day "Necesitas cambiarte la vida" to my friend that speaks only Spanish and having some problems with substance abuse etc... so I guess it works for other things unless what I said was wrong. Gracias.

This from about.com

cambiar (to change), cambiarse (to switch to a different item, such as changing clothes or moving to a different house): Hay tres libros que cambiaron mi vida. There are three books that changed my life. Nos cambiamos de compañía telefónica. We're switching to a different telephone company.

and this might help too:

Change

y en Ecuador - mudarse de ropa...

en español "estándar" se dice "una muda", o sea, una muda de ropa"

Siempre hay algo más por aprender...cierto?
