Me alegra que pases - it makes me happy that...
Me alegro de que pases... - I am happy that...
See? Even in English you use the third person (makes) and the first person (am) to express the same idea.
Thank you. It is clear, but a little complex at the moment, but I am sure that I will get it.
As alba said. The ending is "o" if it is you who is doing the action. In this case it is not you who are doing the action. It is not you who are "making happy" but to you to which the "making happy "is being done. the action is being done by the event - 3rd person. The conjugation for the 3rd person of alegrar is alegra
So not quite "me you make happy" but "it makes me happy" with the it being the event.
so it's " me you make happy..." ?
Me alegra que...It makes me happy that...
"me" is who is being made happy..."que pases buen tiempo con tus hijos" is what is making me happy so "alegrar" is conjugated to match that phrase. "Me" is the direct object, who is receiving the action of the verb, who is being made happy.
However, to make this all the more confusing, if I said "Me alegro de que..." I would mean that "I'm pleased about..." and then alegro would be correct because it would be used as a pronomial verb and the "me" would not be a direct object; it would just be the pronoun attached to that verb.
"Me alegra" is correct because "alegrar" is the equivilant of "to make happy" so the fact that you are having a good time with your kids makes me happy "me alegra". Since I am not making myself happy I wouldn't say "me alegro".
