What does "el salar" mean?

I was reading a text and there was a sentence like this;
"A través del Altiplano llegamos a Uyuni, el salar más grande del mundo."
What does el salar mean? Thanks.

It is a kind of salt desert or shallow lake with high concentration of salts and nitrates. The largest one is the one in Uyuni, Bolivia.
