It's the national dish of Venezuela. It consists of black beans, white rice, and shredded meat with onions and peppers. Often there are fried plantains, too. Usually the meat is beef, but sometimes it is fish, capybara, or cayman. The Catholic Church says that capybara is a fish, so you can eat it on the days when you're not supposed to eat meat. We never asked the vendors what kind of meat they used.

The black beans and rice are the real staples, and a lot of people eat it that way. The fried bananas are really tasty, too. - KevinB, Sep 5, 2010
