¿¿Somos 4 hermanos??

Question

My friend had a Spanish letter she asked me to translate since she knows I like to learn Spanish and know a fair amount. In the letter, there are some things that don't make sense to me. (They didn't put many accent marks on things either, so it's confusing because you don't know what tense they're trying to use; they also aren't ending their sentences when they should) Please tell me what they mean.

-Tengo 4 hermanas y somos 4 hermanos.

-Me senti muy contento cuando recibi el regalo q' me envio q' lo disfrute mucho con mis hermanos y le mando una foto con la camisa y zapatos q' me envio.

Also, I just added

-Espero q' Dios me la siga bendiciendo a ti y a tus hijos acada vez mas.

Hi, Brady.

It's not unusual for there to be no accent marks and limited punctuation in very casual emails or letters. Plus that I see that you have the "q" business for "que", which is also common in casual correspondence.

I have 4 sisters and we are 4 brothers (I assume he's one of the brothers).

I was very happy when I received the present that you sent me. I enjoyed it very much with my siblings. I am sending you a picture with the shirt and shoes that you sent me.

The missing accent marks would have been a clue that it was mostly preterite tense.

The last part - "le mando una foto..." can also be translated "I am sending him/her a photo..." Maybe that makes sense?

Maybe I am not understanding your question...is the person who has asked you to translate this letter the same ;person who sent the shirt and the shoes? If so, would it make sense that the writer of the letter would say "you", since the letter would be to the gift giver?

On the other hand, if a third party sent the shoes and the shirt, the writer could also be referring to "he/she sent me" and "I am sending a photo to him/her", since the forms for the "Ud." and the "él/ella" forms are the same.

I do know that the person who wrote the letter did draw a picture and send it to them, so maybe that does make sense. - f8128ba1e4, Sep 4, 2010

I am sending you a photo of me wearing the shirt and shoes that you sent me.

As writtten, it could mean that "I am sending you a photo along with the shoes and shirt that you sent me (I am returning your gifts)."

It is just ambiguous wording.

If you are trying to figure out the pronouns, I'm not sure that they are correct.

I don't think they would be returning the gifts, but the first translation might work. I think a lot of times they send pictures of them wearing things people sent them. I'm not sure if they did in this case or not, I'll have to ask. - f8128ba1e4, Sep 4, 2010

He is telling the sender how happy he was to receive the package, that he enjoyed it with his brothers and has taken a pic of the shirt and shoes (probably wearing them) and sent back to the sender. - Nicole-B, Sep 4, 2010
