Yes my mystery object is/are gaitors/gaiters.

(I hardly ever go into the bush without wearing these sturdy gaitors - you wear them over hiking pants - great protection against snakes - especially in the summer months. The bottom part of the gaitors reaches right down enclosing the shoelace part of your hiking boots - so less tripping-over as well ..)

(I couldn't find a translation for this object - perhaps someone else could help)
