Preterite or Imperfect/Estar & Ser
If I want to ask a friend "How was your weekend? " referring to the weekend we just had would you use ser or estar? I believe it would be "estar"....but which tense - I am thinking preterite because it was the weekend we just had but as I am not specifically saying last weekend (and not indicating the event was completed), it might be the imperfect tense (but I am not sure) - or is it assumed that I am referring to a completed event (ie last weekend) and therefore it would then be the preterite tense.
So would it be:
¿Cómo ESTUVISTE/ESTABAS su fin de semana?
If I was to say "how was the party last night?" - because I am mentioning last night (and this specifically refers to the event that was completed because it was last night) this would also be estar in the preterite?
¿Cómo ESTUVISTE la fiesta anoche?
I hope someone could help me with this simple request (though not simple to me - because the more I think about it, the more it confuses me!!!).

Thank you for your quick response - so it should be ¿Cómo estuvo su el fin de semana? and ¿Cómo estuvo la fiesta anoche? (the subjects being the weekend and the party)
Your explanation re: preterite is spot on. Thank you. Its now becoming alot clear for me. Thank you.
estabas/estuviste are 2nd person.
Think about which person you would use in English.
How was your weekend? What is the subject of the sentence (verb)?
Same with How was the party last night?
estuviste is the wrong person for the verb.
To answer one of your questions...it should be the preterite past tense since what happened last weekend or last night is completed; not ongoing nor habitual (in your contexts).
As to whether is is Ser or Estar...think of what ¿Cómo está? asks and compare it to what ¿Cómo es? is asking.
