"Barrier island" in Spanish?

Watching the news about Hurricane Earl's damage to my home state of North Carolina, and trying to post an answer to Word of the Day about it, makes me wonder how to say "barrier island" in Spanish. That is the geological term for the string of islands that comprise the Outer Banks and indeed most of the coastline of North Carolina.

Is it "isla barrera"?

In English "barrier" is an appositive, that is, a noun modifying another noun. How does that work in Spanish? I suspect my clumsy translation of an English phrase using an appositive into a Spanish phrase with two nouns is wrong. The central idea is that of an island. "Barrier" clarifies what kind of island it is.

Thanks! ¡Gracias!

  • I searched the island on Wikipedia in English, and then I found the Spanish version.
