Se usa "Ponerse" con adjetivos de emoción y condiciónes temporales. triste, furioso, contento, mal, serio, molesto, alegre, de buen/mal humor.
Cuando ella se pone triste, me pongo así.

Then "se siente" and "se pone" should work. Its always been kind of wierd that its (poner) and not (hacer) in these cases. - MattM, Sep 2, 2010

probably more "I become like that".
Me puse enfadado. I became enraged.
ponerse=to become, to get (with emotions, feeling)
llegar a ser, hacerse=become president, etc.
from our dictionary:
¡no te pongas así! -> don't be like that!; (no te enfades) don't get upset!, don't be sad! (no te pongas triste)
You were correct with "get".
