Can you just say "What did you want" like this on the phone? A character did on this show. Gracias.

Since it is imperfect I would say it was more like:
What were you wanting? Ongoing into the present...you may still want it.
What did you want? preterite... perfected, over and done with, you no longer want it.

If you answer the phone and right away say qué querias, it doesn`t sound polite.
