"Speaking in Tongues"

Does anyone know a colloquial or idiomatic translation for this in Castellano? From what I can gather it's hysterical rolling about and muttering nonsense in public congregations, often within Christian cults in the US.

Thanks

The practice of speaking in tongues that is, speaking in different languages empowered by God's Holy Spirit first took place on the day of Pentecost following after Jesus ascencion to God, and is completely Biblical/Scirptural -being practised by Jeus disciples up to the present day. God wanted to show his power to the people from other nations who heard the dicsiples speak in all their different langauges It was a fulfilment of prophecy (Acts Ch 2 vs 16 21 Joel Ch2 vs 28 -32)

There is a more private/personal use of speaking in tongues but there is no scriptural evidence to suggest this was ever, or should ever be, accompanied by rolling around on the floor (which seems to be an additional man-made practice from what I can see.!) The practice of speaking in tongues is part of the Christian experience and is not a weird cultish practice ...although it is unfortunate that some denominations in the U.S.A appear to have taken the practice to extremes and beyond the biblical examples shown in Scripture.

In the bible speaking with othr tongues is referred to as follows:

1 Hechos Cap 2 v 4 ..."Y fueron todos llenos de Espíritu Santo, y comenzaron a hablar en otras lenguas, según el Espíritu les daba que hablasen"

Are you suggesting that people actually suddenly attain the ability to speak a language they have never studied? Some sort of GodgivenDict? By the way please don't be offended I've just realised you are a practicing Christianred face

Does anybody know the Castellano for the phrase as I want to write a semi humorous article about the Catalan linguistic controversy- I read an article in the Menorcan the other day that argued that the political power wielded by the Peninsular Catalan government is destroying Menorquín. I fancy writing a jokey riposte. wink

I always thought it was el don de lenguas, but I must admit now I'm not so sure as I don't know as much as FELIZ77 to assure it...

PS: By the way, thanks for that answer, I learnt something interesting today ^^
