question on "Dándose"
I have found where "darse cuenta" is translated - to realize. However, I found the following phrase "dándose cuenta" which is translated - he realized. Could anyone explain or direct me to where I can find an explanation of "dándose." It appears to be the gerund of darse, but it seems that "se dio" would accomplish the same thing. Any help will be appreciated.

The gerundio is usually translated as a word ending in "ing" so I would suggest that is realizing...rather than realized.
I don't think there is anything special to find out about dándose. It is just the gerundio form of darse.
I think you might find it more informative to see similar uses of the gerundio. Read this article (the progressive tenses are obvious, but observe how the gerundio is used in adverbial clauses.)
This article on how to use the gerundio is more informative for its don'ts rather than its do's. cómo usar el gerundio
