best translation for the word "event"
Helping a web designer translate some space sensitive text. One of the words is "events".
I found the word "eventos" but I'm not sure if that's a legitimate translation. I'd prefer to not use the word "acontecimientos" due to its length.
Is "eventos" understood by native Spanish speakers? Is there a better word?

Usually 'el acontecimiento' is a better word, but eventos is understood by spanish speakers and will make sense
The word "evento" used to mean "unforeseen happening" (well, still does, in theory), but people began to use it like in English and now this modern usage has almost displaced the original one, which some natives do not even know any longer. Of course, natives who have a very good command of the language know and use the original meaning, which is required in literature, especially if the novel is not contemporary.
If you want to avoid it, there is a whole range of words to use, depending on the type of event: acontecimiento, prueba, acto, número, programa, suceso, congreso, resentación, competición, reunión, campeonato, torneo, promoción,...
If you gave us a little more context it might narrow the choices. By "event" do you mean something like a show, or a meeting, or something that just happened, or something else?
