Great question! I think that anyone studying Spanish should expose themselves to the many different cultures represented by this language. Personally, it has helped me in communicating to people in the different Latin American countries I have visited. Learning Spanish is a great start, but it is always helpful to understand the way people of any country you are visiting think.

Unlike studying languages like Italian or German for example, which involve only one country, Spanish covers many, many countries on different continents. You can spend some time studying the culture of Spain, then for variety, learn about Spanish speaking countries in the Caribbean, South America, Central America and North America. There are so many interesting things to discover in each of these places, including art, food, customs, clothing, holidays, etc. The options are almost endless.

I think studying the culture of any country is really beneficial for anyone interested in learning its language. Even if you are not interested in learning the language, understanding the various cultures around the world opens us all up to new ideas and better global communication in general.

It is a "small world after all". wink

Most certainly. Yes!!

The language without the culture is very flat. It is also another way to stay interested in the language and you can learn more key phrases and information by reading about events and holidays.

For me in California there is a strong Latin American influence, especially from Mexico. Knowing about Dia de la muerte, the true meaning of cinco de mayo, and even la raza give me a greater understanding of people and a sense of common ground and shared experience.

Spanish is also a great language for greeting people. It is an art form. I become more sociable, talking in the language (or at least listening and practicing in my head). Spanish speakers really know how to greet each other and make everyone feel like family.

Knowing about the food and being able to talk about it or ask questions is a wonderful way to learn. We have Mexican markets our here like Vallarta and Tres Sierras and they are so much fun to visit. I am not sure how anyone can live without cilantro and limes.

Oh and salsa dancing or even just listening to a sixteen piece salsa orchestra is an absolute religious experience. Current events, geography it is all very very important.
