cuantos and cuantas

why its 'cuántos años tienes?' and its not cuántas .and what's the difference between 'cuántos and cuántas' . thanks

Cuántos in this case is an adjective meaning 'how many', and so it agrees in number and gender with the noun it modifies, años. Does that makes sense? The difference between cuántos and cuantás is nothing more than the fact that one is the masculine and the other the femine expression of the adjective.

Gender must match. ¿Cuántas paginas hay en el internet? ¿Cuántas veces necesito decirte? Dame mi dinero. Male and female genders. Años is male, paginas is female. Vez is female.

Since "años" is male and plural, then "cuantos" must be male and plural as well.
