Which is better for "she went out"
Ella salió de casa, or Ella salió a la calle. (for general, she went out). The second strikes me as less sensible, she went out to the street, I don't even get it really. Is the second idiomatic somehow? Gracias.

Ella salió is perfect. if you say ella salió a la calle you´re emphazising ´a la calle´ for some reason, that may be interpreted out from context.
Yes The Ella salió de casa is perfect. As the other one is more out out kinda thing at the fist one means more like she went out for a coffee or she went our to buy the shopping as the other one is like she went out to a birthday she went out to go halloween trickle treeting its more off a avent
Also (typical in Spain) "Ha salido".
A. ¿Está tu mujer en casa?
B. No, ha salido.
I agree, and would just like to add..... I've used the phrase "salir a la calle para", for example, salen a la calle para asustar a las jóvenes (like during Haloween).
