13 October: All the miners are on the surface! Now only the rescuers who descended to help them await their return to safety.

13 October: As of 8:30 AM U.S. Eastern time the 11th miner has just reached the surface.
12 October: The first rescuer has arrived in the mine and is preparing the first miner to enter the rescue capsule.
The first miner is now about 12 hours away from rescue - the hope is that this will occur at about 8:00 PM, Chile time. Please don't stop sending your positive thoughts and prayers. With so many men to bring up, such a great distance, many things must still go right for all to be saved!
]This is an amazing story of hope, though the trapped miners are still months away from rescue. Here are two links, one to a BBC Mundo story in Spanish, that I was able to read with my upper beginner skills and a little help from SD's dictionary, and one in English. However, news links fade quickly, so if you read this later you may want to search online for updates. I will be praying for the miners and their families and I hope you will, too.

15 September Update: One of the miners is now a father, to a baby named "Esperanza," "Hope." See my answer below for a link to a story about this. Keep praying!
17 September Update: The bore hole that will eventually enable the miners to be pulled to the surface has reached their chamber. It is only about 12 inches (30 ]cm) wide so far, and will have to be widened considerably to allow them to be pulled up, but this is wonderful progress. Keep sending up prayers!
26 September Update: I hope you are still thinking of these courageous men, their families and friends, and all the workers laboring around the clock to bring them home. Drilling is going faster than expected, and some believe the miners will be out by the end of October. Here is a link to a Time magazine online article about how they are coping:
8 October: The miners are very close to rescue. If all goes well they may all be out of the mine by the end of next week. This story in the Business Week describes the changes the men have gone through during their ordeal.
10 October: There are so many news stories available now that I am not trying to update the links here in the main question post. The rescuers hope to bring up the first miners on Wednesday (13 October). However, there is no way to predict what technical problems may arise when they send down the first rescuer prior to bringing up miners.
Please continue to keep the miners and everyone involved in this rescue effort in your prayers!
11 October: Reinforcing the shaft was completed at 3:00 AM. Now the crane assembly at the top of the shaft is being built. Then the capsule will have to be tested empty before a person can be placed in it. Plans are still on track for the first miner to be brought up on Wednesday,

It's totally incredible, a miracle, that they are still alive. They say it will take three or four months more to rescue them. Imagine waiting 700 meters underground for that period. There are more articles in the newspapers.
Those poor people down there! It's a truly an amazing story. I cannot imagine what it's going to be like for them to spend almost 4 months down in that hole. It's going to almost Christmas before that happens. They could use all prayers any are willing to offer.

What a fantastic story this is.
As I write BBC is telling me that the rescue bore hole is only about 35 metres from the miners. They are also saying this is the deepest rescue effort of all time and the most number of miners.
They also say that the fittest miners will be brought up first - this surprised me but the reasoning is that the resuers need the information that the fittest can give them in case they need to modify the process in any way.
What an incredible effort this has been. All credit to Chile.
Expect to reach miners by Saturday.
Just a quick update on the continuing story of these amazing men. There is hope now that they may be rescued by the end of October, much earlier than the end of December that was first forecast. Please keep praying for them!
The main rescue drill has made its first breakthrough to the trapped miners! The hole must still be enlarged but this is wonderful news.
Thanks for posting this. I thought about it too but am caught up in too much work. I will be watching this story every day. We use a lot of things every day we wouldn't have without miners.
I'm answering again to bump this topic up. Let's not forget these brave men and their suffering families and friends. There has been some sensationalistic media coverage of rifts within the different groups of loved ones. Rather than focusing on that, please keep the miners in your thoughts and prayers. They have a long ordeal still ahead of them. I have updated the links on the main question to today's stories on BBC, in English and in Spanish.
