a more thorough definition of "meta"

When looking up the definition of "meta" in the dictionary, it defines the meaning as -goal, finishing line. Yet, when I put the following sentence to be translated: no tengo a nadie que me meta en el estanque, it translates it as I don't have anyone to "put" me in the pool. Where can I find the definition as "put" and is that the same as "poner?"

In the way I'm thinking of it, it is like "to put in" rather than "to put" like poner. - MacFadden, Aug 22, 2010
Like, meter on gol. To score a goal, to put the ball into the net. - MacFadden, Aug 22, 2010
