Lie detector?

Lie detector?

How would you translate 'lie detector machine' into Spanish? It's also called a polygraph.

Edit: I was thinking something like 'detectora de mentir'. I'm pretty sure I butchered it but I haven't talked to any native speaker that understands 'polígrafo'. I'm pretty sure many English speakers don't know what a polygraph is either, though.

Interesting question from someone that has been here for a while. What did the translate tool return you when you looked each of those up?

I am reasonably sure someone will come along and do just that, but now that they are in print in your question, they won't even have to retype the words, they can just double click on the words. Hmmm.

You entered: lie detector

Machine translation (may not be accurate): detector de mentiras

Polígrafo was the translation, but when I told that to a native speaker, they had no idea what it meant. - watermonitor, Aug 21, 2010

Is this a polygraph machine and the paper graph the polygraph or are both called a polygraph? I know that taking the examination itself is often called a polygraph. As in: "Would you be willing to submit to a polygraph [examination]?"

Apparently polígrafo refers to the machine

also la máquina de la verdad

We should ask Joe if this is Un Polígrafo o un Detector de Mentiras. Watch him answer Geiger Counter! - LateToDinner, Aug 21, 2010
haha that's it! But I think that polygraph is used interchangably; both the machine and examination are called polygraphs. - watermonitor, Aug 21, 2010
I like your point Q, It is even asked if you will submit to a polygraph test. Sit here, we're going to give you a polygraph. - LateToDinner, Aug 21, 2010
Thanks, I like presents. - LateToDinner, Aug 21, 2010

Now that I have that out of my system,

Hope this helps
