In English, we can say the following thing in two ways:

  • He said, "I want to eat now."
  • He said that he wants to eat now.

Generally the rules regarding the connection between the two phrases is pretty simple. And my question is... for Spanish, what kind of rule is there regarding such sentences?

It's referred to as direct and indirect speech and the Spanish rules don't differ much from English, but the punctuation is different. They use dashes or angle brackets more that quotes, but on the computer, dashes and anlge brackets are used for other formatting, so quotation marks are seen more often, even for Spanish dialog.
