Use of reflexive verbs

Are reflexive verbs used only for humans and human activity, or can they also refer to dogs, horses, etc? For example, if my horse cuts his front leg by clipping himself with his back hoof, would I say, "Fido se corta el pierna." ?

Yes they can be used with anything doing the action to themselves - as you say animals often need reflexive verbs as they also 'wake up', 'lay down' etc etc
