Hola, amanda, and welcome!

There is no way to tell that a verb is irregular just by looking at the infinitive form. The only one that will make you suspicious is "ir," to go. When you drop the ir ending to get the verb stem you have nothing left - so something irregular is going to happen to this verb, right?

The dictionary entry will tell you if it is irregular. Many of the most common verbs in Spanish are irregular, just as the most common verbs in English are usually irregular. (English examples: to be is irregular, just as in Spanish; to give is irregular, just as in Spanish.)

On the bright side, some irregular verbs share patterns that make them easier to learn. Once you practice a bit you will find them easier to remember than you might think.

Hope that's a good answer.

EDIT I forgot to mention: this site has a very helpful verb conjugator, under the "more" tab at the top of the page. The conjugator lists the irregular forms of a verb in red to make them easy to spot.
