Is anyone else having a problem with line breaks?

The spacing is very bad on some of my posts. What are SD members using to single space and double space? I have tried the angle brackets with BR (the html code for line break) but it doesn't seem to work. ¿Alguna sugerencia? - Any suggestions?

It is possible to use the
to insert spaces between paragraphs, but to do this you must make sure that your text is placed between opening and closing paragraph tags i.e

Text goes here

For example you could use the following code to create:

single space

Text on first line
Text on second line
Text on third line

And this is what you would see:

Text on first line
Text on second line
Text on third line

double-space

Text on first line

Text on second line

Text on third line

And this is what you would see:

Text on first line

Text on second line

Text on third line

triple-space

Text on first line

Text on second line

Text on third line

And this is what you would see:

Text on first line

Text on second line

Text on third line

And so on....

Ahh, so thats' the trick! To put it in quote mode,of course! - Gekkosan, Aug 10, 2010
I didn't understand about the paragraph now I do; it's been a long time since I did html. I can't find my book either. Rats!! - bandit51jd, Aug 10, 2010

I would like to see an example, can you place 7s between the keystrokes so the machine won't recognize the command? - LateToDinner

[Start Geeky Mode]

Here, if you want to create a hard empty space, just write the following directly into the text editor. alt text

It may be enough just to press the space bar in between the "p" tags, but I find that this doesn't always work. That's why I explicitly write the "non-breaking space" command.

This line and the following sow what happens when you use the double-enter technique described above:

You get a new line with a space in between lines. Good for most purposes.

Now, if you want a larger space (two lines) in between paragraph elements, then you can insert the above command.

That's what I have done between this line and the previous one. Did you notice the wider space in between lines? If you want wider spacers, just introduce more paragraph commands.

[End of Geeky mode]

Thank you, and in appreciation I will not comment on Gekky mode. - LateToDinner, Aug 10, 2010
Thank you for not calling Gekky geeky. - amykay, Aug 10, 2010

Hi Gekkosan

Sorry, I meant to show the paragraph tab and the non-breaking space command, but the editor goes ahead an attempts to translate them no matter how I write it. If you know HTML, you know what I'm talking about. The text editor interprets most HTML commands directly.

There are a couple of ways to accomplish this. First you could try using the ampersand character codes to insert your greater than and less than brackets

< ? <
> ? >

This way the following text:

<p> <br/> </p>

would be posted as:

The major drawback to this method is that if you need to go back and edit your response you will have to reenter each ampersand code manually because once you go back in to edit your response, the java editor will automatically translate each ampersand character into its corresponding symbol (i.e. the angle brackets) and then when you re-post your response it will try to read each angle bracket as markup code.

Another way that you could do this would be to use markdown rather than markup. That is to say that if you place your text within a set of backticks (`) then the code will not be read either. For example the following markdown:

`

`

would look like this when you post

The major drawback to the back-tick method is that you cannot use it inside of a code block (for example, it will not work if you try to use it on text that is typed between an opening and closing paragraph tag, i.e.
and
).

Ignore, please - just curious how Gekko was able to yell HTML at us. I thought you couldn't shout longer than 3 letter words.

NOT

EDIT: Ah! but it won't let you use ASPCA in the comments.

Just hit "enter" twice.

That will space it out a bit better.

Someone must have changed how "shouting" is recognized, as it didn't used to allow me to write EEUU/USA and now it does!!!

Perhaps you were trying to do it in the comment section ... different rules I just learned. - LateToDinner, Aug 10, 2010

I usually just press the Enter key twice, to generate a hard break. However, if I really want to make sure that I get a solid line of space, I insert a non-breaking space command within a paragraph tag.

Sorry, I meant to show the paragraph tab and the non-breaking space command, but the editor goes ahead an attempts to translate them no matter how I write it. If you know HTML, you know what I'm talking about. The text editor interprets most HTML commands directly.

I tried putting each element within quotation marks and it still didn't show it. Let me see if I find an image. - Gekkosan, Aug 10, 2010

I agree with Fontanero.

Just hit "enter" twice to make a paragraph space between sentences.
