Cómo se dice "five hundred" en español? (How do you say "five hundred" in Spanish?
Aprendí que se dice "cinco cientos" en uno de mis libros de español que estudio. Pero, el la "Translation" enlace en esta sitio, que dice "quinientos" Qual es muy común?
I learned that you say "cinco cientos" in one of the previous Spanish classes (books) that I was studying. But in the "Translation" link in this site, it says "quinientos." Which is more common, or are both acceptable, for example like saying "fifteen hundred" vs. "one thousand five hundred"?
Grasias.

Hello, and welcome to the forum. It is indeed quinientos, as everyone says. Cinco cientos is incorrect, but a common mistake, because it resembles how other hundreds are made, for example, trescientos. You may be interested in this link. You just type in the number (ex. "500") and it tells you how to say it in Spanish ("quinientos").
No es cinco cientos
Five hundred = Quinientos
I have never seen five hundred referred to as cinco cientos as this is not correct
I hope that this helps
Are you certain that you read "cinco cientos" in your books? The proper way to say "five hundred" is "quinientos". Maybe your memory is playing tricks on you? This happens to all of us occasionally....
Thanks everyone!! this helps me in my struggle to learn Spanish (a struggle which I am enjoying!!)
Muchas Gracias!!!
Following blackbull's logic, is it correct to say, "hay cinco cientos" in this picture?
I have only heard of Five hundred correctly referred to as 'Quinientos' which is the correct description for the total amount of money Euros, Libras esterling, Drachmas, etc..
However, I did wonder whether it is possible to use cinco cientos as a descriptive term for how many hunderds there are eg There are five, hundred euro notes
= Hay cinco, biletes de cientos, tres biletes de cincuenta etc,,,(as illustrated in Canicos's picture) rather than as a descrription of the total amount which should be Quinientos)
Correción hay cinco, billetes de cien
I do not know if this is ever used when counting large quantities of anything money etc??? I would be interested to know If not I will happily stick to Quinientos
I hope people understand what I am trying to say here lol
For some reason my dial-up won't let me comment on a specific post...in reply to canicos and to Feliz - "hay cinco billetes de cien".
Nunca he oido alquien dice "cinco cientos"....
Es muy comun que se dice "Quinientos".
Saludos.
It's quinientos. I've never heard cinco cientos. That sounds like something a first-year would say.
Quinientos es lo más aceptado...quizás puedas decir cinco cientos cuando te refieras a otro tipo de cuenta, como por ejemplo:
Cinco docenas cinco quintos cinco pares
