6th from the top and 8th from the bottom look awfully similar.

And now that I have that off my chest, I would like to tell you - I am impressed! Thank you!

When the printer finishes, I'll ink in Jeezzle's suggestions as well and get to work becoming familiar with each of them.

Last year you posted:

Here is a table I put together a year ago. It helped me -- hope it helps you.

este = this (masc.)

esta = this (fem.)

esto = this (neutr.)

and I've gotten some mileage out of it, too.

Thank you!

This may make no sense to anyone but me but a key to remembering ese vs ests for me was that the english word (that) uses up both t's so there's none left for the spanish equivalent (ese) whereas the english word (this) only uses one 't' so there's one - Kiwi-Girl, Aug 9, 2010
left for este/a/o :) - Kiwi-Girl, Aug 9, 2010
Cracked me up, MC. I'll send you a box of t's - LateToDinner, Aug 11, 2010

It's a good list Daniel. Some comments.

  • I think "en tanto" means the same basic thing as "ya que"
  • I rarely hear "entre tanto" so I can't comment on that one, except to say that at least around here, mientras tanto is used for the same purpose....
  • I wonder why you put "Not ni modo" next to your phrase, it seems like you are saying that it cannot be used without the que? I have heard "Ni modo" just like that a few times to mean like "Whatever dude, it can't be helped" but I can't say if that is grammatically correct, but it IS used.
  • Por LO menos / Al menos - At least
  • A propósito can mean "on purpose" when used at the end of the sentence, otherwise it is the same as "por cierto" - by the way.
  • Por otro lado = por otra parte = en cambio.
  • De todas formas (or) De todos modos = De todas maneras.
  • Oye = hey you, Oiga = hey you (sir) Ud. form
  • I think of menos mal as "thank goodness"
  • Your right that "es que" is being used a ton, I am hearing it lately in place of "creo que" but I don't know if that is a regional thing, it's probably an incorrect usage but I can't say for sure.

Good list. wink

Thank you "Jeezzle" I am not sure about "Ni modo" I too have heard it. On "Es que" and "Este" is being used too much. I was just at Playas de Rosarito Mexico and the young crowd really used these. They are sort of meaningless the way they were used. - Daniel, Aug 8, 2010

Nice list smile

Remember too that 'para qué' (with the accent) can mean 'why?' or 'what for?' but it should be obvious to your listeners which one you're saying by the accent you place one the 'qué?'.

That's very good Daniel ! You have built up a good beginner's phrasebook and I cannot see any obvious mistakes/errors even after having read it through several times.

Just to point out, though, that por eso can also mean = therefore (as well as for that reason, that's why)

You even taught me a new phrase, 'date cuenta que' thank you grin Just shows that learning is a two-way process you keep learning from those you help to teach lol tongue wink

Daniel - outstanding!

I have marked your thread into my "favourites" - I can see many useful phrases there, particularly for my my thread "¿Qué será esto?". It's those small "conversational-type phrases that are so useful when talking directly to someone. I've marked them under "Daniel's phrases" so I remember wink

Wow! Annie -- I feel honored. These have been gathered over time that I considered to be the most common. - Daniel, Aug 8, 2010
Oh yea -- I started this list about a 1-1/2 yr ago because I would get confused, I do have more but they are real easy to understand or not as common. - Daniel, Aug 8, 2010
