changing lanes while driving?

I am curious to know the proper word for 'lane' when driving on a road or highway. My Oxford Spanish-English dictionary has "carril'" as the primary word for traffic. However, someone from El Salvador also suggested "linea".

Any thoughts, or suggestions would be appreciated.

Carril is the lane. Linea is any line painted on the surface. Linea can also be "Line" as in queue, but most of the time this is called Cola.
