solo vs. mismo?

If I wanted to say "I rode on a plane by myself," would I say "Volé en un avión por mí mismo" or "Volé sola en un avión"? Is there a difference?

I would say that "por mi mismo" means "without anyone's help", while "solo" has the meaning "without anyone around me". This is the difference.

For example:

Aprendí español por mi misma

I have learned Spanish by myself (without anyone's help)

Todo el día he estado sola en mi casa.

I have been home alone all day (without anyone around me)
