las quijadas de la vida

o

las mandíbulas de la vida

Those are the word for word translations of a trademark term, Jaws of Life, which is a piece of heavy rescue equipment run by compressed air and used to open up crushed vehicles so trapped passengers can be removed. Here's a picture:

Our local rescue squad is holding a fundraiser to buy one and I began wondering how I would say this in Spanish. Perhaps a native speaker knows what similar equipment is called in a Spanish-speaking fire or rescue department.

Just curious!

¡Muchas gracias!

Jaws of Life is a brand name, and as such is used in Spain also. Some of the tools made by them include:

cizallas, separadores y carneros.

The term "Jaws of Life" refers to several types of piston-rod hydraulic tools known as cutters , spreaders and rams , which are used to pry open vehicles involved in accidents when a victim may be trapped.

If you go to Google.ES and search Jaws of Life you may find it useful. You might have to click on Traducir
