Ancient Rituals
This is a very old and forgotten ritual which occured in the middle ages in England. The day before a wedding, the bridesmaids would bake dozens of large thin crusty biscuits. During the wedding ceremony, the bridesmaids proceeded to break these biscuits over the brides head. Now I don't know how or why this ritual ever came about, but from it came that well know phrase, not tonight dear, I have a headache.

In the north of England, one of the oldest inhabitants of the neighborhood would be standing on the threshold of the bride's new home. She would toss a plateful of short-bread over her head, so that it falls outside. Guests scramble for a piece of this short-bread as it is considered very fortunate to get a piece.
I wonder if this is where throwing the bouquet at the reception of a wedding comes from? Interesting Nicole!!

We need to get to the bottom of this bread/cake throwing tradition!
