Welcome to SpanishDict, drummer! grin

Ooooooh! Let me answer! Please!!! I L O V E Fried Ice cream! .

There's a couple of different ways. The term most likely to be understood by a Mexican in a Mexican Restaurant would be: nieve frita (I know, literally it means 'fried snow', but trust me. wink)

"Yo quisiera nieve frita." (I would like fried ice cream.)

But you could also say "Yo quisiera helado frito".

Enjoy! .

I first experienced Fried Ice Cream in a Japanese Restaurant back when I was knee-high to a grasshopper. wink And let me tell you it was good! It had a breading-type coating (or tempura) that surrounded the ice cream, insulating it from the heat of quick-deep-frying. Unfortunately most of the Mexican Restaurants that I have seen serve it use a coating that looks like (or is) nothing more than cornflakes.

If you want to do it youself, Here's a recipe, and here's a video.

Here are some tantalizing photos to get your mouth salivating... tongue wink .

Interesting, I've never seen fried ice cream on the menu at Japanese restaurants... only green tea ice cream and almond cookies! - amykay, Aug 6, 2010
Your first photo looks like tempura ice cream! - amykay, Aug 6, 2010
Tempura Ice Cream is another way to say Japanese Fried Ice Cream. 'Tempura' is a process of battering and frying food. :) - chaparrito, Aug 6, 2010

Fried Ice Cream

Ingredients

1 quart Vanilla ice cream

1 cup Cornflakes cereal, crushed fine

1/2 cup Sugar

1 tsp Cinnamon

1 Egg

Oil for frying

Suggested toppings: Honey and whipped cream

In a shallow bowl mix the cornflake crumbs, cinnamon and sugar. With an ice cream scoop make six large balls of ice cream. Roll the ice cream balls in one half of the crumb mixture and place on a lined pan, cover and freeze for two hours. After two hours remove from the freezer. Beat the egg in a small bowl and dip each ball into the egg and then roll in the remaining crumb mixture. Return the coated balls to the freezer and freeze again for 4-5 hours. When you are ready to serve them heat the oil to 450 degrees in a deep fryer or electric skillet. Place the ice cream ball into the hot oil with a frying basket or slotted spoon. Fry for only one minute. That should be enough time to completely fry the coating without melting the ice cream. Fry one ball at a time and serve in a bowl. Drizzle with honey and top with whipped cream. You can also top with chocolate sauce, caramel sauce, nuts, or anything you like.

I agree with all the posts above: fried ice cream is another one of those peculiar things that you find everywhere in the US, but that is not so frequent in other countries.

It is possible that you may find it in a restaurant that caters to tourists, in Mexico, but as Heidita says, in many other places they may think that either you are pulling their leg, or that you just don't know what you are saying.

After all, it is a weird concept, fried ice.

Parece que el helado no engorda lo suficiente. It has to be fried... - LuisaGomezBartle, Aug 6, 2010

You can say "Quisiera helado frito." Nieve is awesome, but it is different than what we normally think of ice cream not usually fried (at least, not in my experience).
