When I was in the Army you didn't even get a tent. You got what they termed a "shelter half". It was 1/2 a tent. You had to combine your half with a buddy's to get the entire tent (for 2). Remember that concept the next time you go camping. And those two sleeping bags they show lying side by side.-they make bags that interlock to form a single large bag for two. I always found that the fun of camping. (of course, I prefer to go camping with females).

There is more than one way to refer to a tent - any sort of tent, in Spanish. Much depends on where you are.

Where I grew up, everybody knows that "tienda de campaña" is camping tent. Another common word is "carpa".

In Puerto Rico, they are called "caseta", which to me means rather something like a guard's station.

From Guillermo's post we can deduce that they have yet another word for it in Argentina, and "tienda de campaña" is strictly for military use.

This is why it is so useful, and important, that the question includes as much context as possible, including the country where I expect to use the expression, if relevant.

According to the RAE, tienda has many definitions, one of which is a framework covered with material used for lodging in a camp or countryside, especially for warfare, but not limited to warfare.

Also according to RAE, a tienda de campaña is a tienda de campo, or a tent for the camp or countryside, which is kind of circular. I've always heard both tienda and tienda de campaña to refer to tents in general, both civilian and military..

Gekkosan the dictionary says camping = la acampada so surely you would say tienda de la acampada to mean camping tent, and if you look the word campaña in the dictionary you will see that it means campaigne rather than camping.

You should know by now that sometimes it doesn't matter what the dictionary says. Gekkosan, a native speaker, tells us that he, and I suppose others around him, are using the words "tienda de campaña" to mean a regular camping tent. - --Mariana--, Aug 3, 2010

It is a campaign tent and as Guillermo has said for military use although I suppose it could have other campaign uses.
