check it out

Here in northern Mexico the verb chequer (or maybe it's chequar) is often used, meaning "to check" as in "to check if the cake is done" or "to check my bank account." I can't find it in a dictionary, and wondered if it's one of those Norteamericano words that have assimilated into the local Spanish.

Any thoughts? If it exists, how would we conjugate it?

Chequear is now accepted as standard usage, but it´s still Spanglish. The proper word is Averiguar.

Hi, blissinger, welcome to the forum!

Yes, "checar" is used a lot in Mexico to mean "to check something out".

"Voy a checarlo" - "I'm going to check it out."

In some parts of Latin America you will also hear "chequear".

This probably will not be in a standard dictionary.
