Co-workers referring to their boss as "Curuco"

I work with some friends from Honduras and we refer to our boss and his wife (in conversation between each other) as: "curuco" and "curuca." I never really thought about what it means. The dictionary says curuca is an eagle-owl. Is this a normal way to refer to a boss? Is it derogatory in any way? (because I don't want to say it if it is). Thank you!

Haha... if that is true, then that would make sense why they call them that, since they sometimes view authority as trying to catch them doing something bad. - EggmanS, Aug 1, 2010
I have no idea, but it makes sense, here we say someone like that has an "eagle eye", becasue eagles have such superior eyesight. - amykay, Aug 1, 2010

It makes me think of the phrase: "He's watching me like a hawk." smile
