Costa Rica ~ Pura Vida!

Hola amigos!

If you have any questions about Costa Rica or my trip, or if you just want to say hi, respond here! I answer in both English and Spanish.

Some Important words:

  • Mae (like my) = Dude
  • Pura Vida = Pure life, their motto and answer to many things
  • Gallo Pinto = Rice and beans made with a special sauce. (Salsa Lizano)

I'm guessing I'll need mosquito repellant and some sun screen, but I really don't know what to expect. Is Costa Rican food spicy? Is English spoken in most places? Are tips expected in most restaurants/sodas? I have a lot more questions, if you'd be so kind...

Generally food isn't spicy, and a lot of people there speak English if you have problems with Spanish. I never once saw a tip jar and my hosts never seemed to do it. I can answer most questions, but the best way is to go experience it ;) - ShaneCope, Aug 1, 2010
Costa rican food is not spicy at all. You dont have to give tips. engl;ish is spoken. - Rey_Mysterio, Aug 9, 2010
Google "The Real Costa Rica" blog. It's a wgite guy that relocated there and he covers everything under the sun! - Ashlita, Aug 18, 2010

Ash

I would looove to go there. I've heard many times that it is the place to go because of its beauty and people. I think that I am now convinced.

¡Pura vida Shane!

Hi, Shane, and welcome to the Forum. My husband and I hope to relocate to Costa Rica for part of the year, we think in the Central Highlands near Santiago de Puriscal. We'll be going in January. I was there for 2 weeks 4 years ago, and had the most fantastic experience there. The Ticos are simply the nicest people I've ever met. The weather in the Central Highlands will be much better for me compared to the harsh winters and hot summers of Chicago. I hope to be fluent (or at least quite competent before we spend any significant time there, as we don't plan to live in an expat conclave.) How long were you there for?
Pura Vida!!!!

Corrections: "¿tu buceas o surfeas?" "ambos deportes" ("ambos", since it quantifies, preceeds the noun) - CalvoViejo, Jul 31, 2010
