You mean like this?

Son las ocho menos cuarto. It is 7:45. (It is quarter to eight.)

I must be having trouble reading English. Maybe that's a good sign. - 0074b507, Jul 31, 2010

I think qfreed and Jorge are right. I also think "45 minutes before the hour" is a clumsy construct in English that you'd probably only hear a newscaster say.

In any case, time is expressed slightly differently in Spanish than in English, so a word for word translation may sound awkward. 45 minutes before the hour is a quarter past the current hour in Spanish.

The correct is 07:15 and not 07:45.

Asi que: son las siete y cuarto o son las siete mas quince

===================

Otherwise it would have been: "15 minutes before the hour" and the correct answer would have been : 07.45

I don't think that it would normally expressed this way, but you can say "Son las seis menos cuarenta y cinco [minutos]." I think that you would normally hear "Son las cinco y cuarto".

Not having read the alluded to thread, I don't know what we are comparing it to for the meaning of easier.

I think the whole reason that they switch from y to menos beyond half past is to avoid using 45 minutes to....
