yo sounding like jo

I was listening to a song in Spanish, and at one point the singer said "yo no puedo vivir" only "yo" sounded like "jo" ( with a English j not a Spanish one). I was wondering if I was miss hearing this or if "yo" is pronounced like "jo" in some accents

You're absolutely right. In some Spanish accents Ys and LLs are pronounced like English Js. For example, Argentinian Spanish accents sound like this.

Updated. There are many regions in many countries where it is common, but the Argentinian accent is the sort of iconic one for j-sounding lls and ys. - MacFadden, Jul 29, 2010
I recall a post on the forum the other day about how someone had talked to pepole about it and when asked, they said they pronounced them like Ys, but when they talked they often made J sounds! Interesting. - MacFadden, Jul 29, 2010
