¿Abierta la puerta?

I've used this formulation to say open the door and I am concerned that it is wrong and maybe I should be saying "abre la puerta". I think... I'm not a native speaker and now that I'm working from dictionaries instead of shop signs.... I'm getting confused because when I translated the two words I see abierto as an adjective and abrir as the verb. In the conjugations there are helping verbs for the stem to change to abierto in the other tenses. Can someone confirm for me the way to say open the door. And if someone can explain the grammar that would be cool too. I'm leaving work now, but when I get home I'm going to look up participles.

Abre la puerta (familiar) or abra la puerta (formal) = open the door. Abierto means open as an adjective, like la puerta está abierta - the door is open. The ending has to match the noun - o for masculine, a for feminine.

mario ha abierto la puerta . Mario has opened the door..you use abierto as an adjective abrir is the verb, command abre la puerta, open the door,that's correct when you say yo v'i abierta la tienda..la puerta esta abierta.the door is open.

Thanks for the response. I edited the question to abierta to match the gender of la puerta. Mind wandering... I did look into the whole participle thing and found that abierto is an irregular past participle of abrir. Not sure if I understand the ramifacations of this yet. Everything in its time.
