What is Chavella/Chavela?

Someone's comment:

In searching a bit more, it does seem to be a name for a girl: Pronunciation: cha-vay-ya Gender: Girl Name Origin: Spanish Name Meaning: An alternate form of Isabel, which means "dedicated to God." More Info: Variations include Chavelle, Chevelle, and Chevie. Also slang for "young girl."

My comment: Chavella/Chavela was a woman's name who worked with my sister. She had acquired that name, although offically it was not her own, but was called this name.

Since she was Anglo....I needed the equivalent name in English. Nearest answer posted was: Isabel, which is close to her true English name, as per a genealogy search of mine.

                                                         T.

I thought you might be interested in the song by Joaquín Sabina called:

"Por el bulevar de los sueños rotos"

The beautiful name "Chavela" is a character in the song.

I included a hyperlink here: link text

Actually, Sabina was referencing Isabel Vargas Lizano (17 April 1919 – 5 August 2012), better known as Chavela Vargas, who was a Costa Rican-born Mexican singer, in the song he mentions "Las amarguras no son amargas cuando las canta Chavela Vargas" - mumbutu, Sep 15, 2015
Which means "Sorrows are not so bitter, when they are sung by Chavela Vargas" - mumbutu, Sep 15, 2015

As an equivalent to the Latin "Isabel" I would see "Elizabeth". Is this your question? And yes, from experience I know, too, that Chavela is an alternate form of Isabel.

Well , actually I know a word which is "chaval / chavala" it's the same thing , a young boy or a young girl. Maybe it means the same thing also and I don't know if Isabel is an equivalent name but if you've seen it , why not?
