Hi, Sopita.

The good news is that there are only three types of verbs in Spanish.

One group ends in -ar, the second group ends in -ir, and the others end in -er.

Hablar -- to speak

Vivir -- to live

Comer -- to eat

Your numbering may confuse her. 1st =AR 2nd=ER 3rd=IR - 0074b507, Jul 29, 2010

Hello, sopita.

As Marianne has already stated, these three letter pairs refer to the infinitive endings on Spanish verbs. Words ending in one of these letter pairs is called an infinitive and translates as "to ..."

Example (from Marianne's post):

Hablar -- To eat

Vivir -- To live

Comer -- To eat

In conjugation of these verbs, ER and IR verbs are usually conjugated the same way, where AR verbs have their own conjugations.

hablas = you speak, vives = you live, comes = you eat

I recommend you check out the "Conjugation" tool on the "More" tab at the top of this screen. Type in several different Spanish infinitives and see how they are conjugated (just look at present tense to start with).

Good News! All of the infinitive verbs end in AR, ER, or IR! This way you will know what is a verb and what is not.
