Vendo perros calientes--> I sell hot dogs. Estoy vendiendo perros calientes--> I am selling hot dogs.
A funny little side note:
Here in Pismo Beach California (big tourist spot) there is a guy who sells hot dogs from a hot dog wagon on the sidewalk for 9 months of the year and there is always a waiting line -- half a block from Harry's Bar (famous place here). He and his wife spend 3 months a year in Central Amreica or South America on what he makes selling hot dogs -- and they have done this for the last 12 years. Wow how cool and what a low pressure profession.
Also Pinks Hot Dogs in Hollywood. I think every movie and television star has eaten at Pinks. Pinks is little more than a elaborate hot dog stand. A limo may even drive up and the chofer gets out to get the hot dogs -- yea that's right. I have stood in line at Pinks for over 20 min. for a hot dog.
I knew I made a mistake being a structural engineer.
Salchicha is what I use for both hot dog and sausage. The dictionary here says "El perro caliente". That may be used, I don't know because I'm not a native, but I don't think I've ever heard it.
Yep Debs is correct. "perros calientes". However the native speakers where I live also say "hot dogs" in Spanish conversation.
"Salchicha" is used only for "sausage" around here (that is in a casing or in link form).
Note: I am not a native Spanish speaker.
I think it just depends on where you are. I have friends who are natives of Puerto Rico and they just say "hot dog"...
