Dear SpanishDict Friends,

Please help me with the proper use of indirect objects. I know that they are always to be used. Thanks in advance, Escomillo.

Alex and Megan were at one time engaged to be married. She was 19 and Alex was 25, and Alex had just graduated from law school and was working for one of London’s top firms. And Megan had just finished her first year at university. Due to a lack of maturity on Megan’s part, as well and jealousy on Alex’s part, they went through an emotionally trying time. And their relationship could not stand the stress of these two factors, and they agreed to cancel the wedding and break up altogether. Seven years later, they again met through a set of unforeseen circumstances. Both were still single but involved in romantic relationships.
Wanting to catch up on old times, Alex agreed to come to a Christmas party that Megan was hosting at her house. Both agreed that they regretted having broken up seven years before, and decided to start dating each other once again. In her heart, Megan never stopped loving Alex during this seven year period. And now that they were dating again, she would not admit this fact to him, as she was trying to protect herself in the event they were to break up again. Megan wanted a friends with benefits type of relationship, which they enjoyad for several months, and after a few weeks, Megan moved into Alex’s house. Megan and Alex were to break up once more.

Megan felt that Alex was not being totally truthful with her. Alex never lied to Megan, but had omitted some important details about a previous romantic relationship. Feeling betrayed, Megan moved out of the Alex’s house, and told him that she never wanted to see him again. In reality, Megan wanted Alex to stop her from leaving the house, and Alex thought about stopping Megan, but didn’t do so. He could not risk being wounded emotionally twice within 30 minutes. Now that they had broken up twice, Alex felt that he would never understand Megan, and women in general.

Here is what me and Debbie (and like two or three natives) came up with. Heidi, please double check for correctness.

Many thanks to all 5 (maybe more) you who put a lot of time into this. You're efforts are helping me to think in Spanish first, vs. English. SpanishDict is THE greatest spanish site! - Escomillo, Aug 1, 2010

Just a side point (from looking at the English section of your work) - when I went to school we were taught (in English) never to start a sentence with the word 'and'.

Although I believe that these days it is no longer considered incorrect to do so, in formal writing I would suggest shying away from it.

Personally speaking, I feel that there are much better ways to begin sentences or in many cases the 'and' can just be dropped smile Just a suggestion though.

I agree...Good suggestion! - --Mariana--, Jul 29, 2010
Agreed. In order to make sentences less complex, and shorter, and more understandable for me, I thought I would risk using this approach. - Escomillo, Jul 29, 2010
We've been taking those out. - socceryo3, Jul 29, 2010

Just to let you know, we're still having a good crack at this. Debbie and I and even a native have been translating/correcting/arguing/discussing this for hours. And we're literally halfway through. We're finished with the first paragraph and have half of the second paragraph finished, but as it's already 3:30 where Debbie and I live and 2:30 where the native helping us lives, we're going to finish tomorrow. Hopefully. Just a little status update.
