¿Qué hay? = ¿Qué hubo?

Notes from Volver. A character says "Qué hay" and it gets put as "What's up"? Can this be the same as Qué hubo or is it different? Gracias.

There are quite a few ways to express the basic empty greeting: "Wassup?"

Just as a trivia thing, I originally learned ¿Qué hay de nuevo? What's new? That got shortened to ¿Qué hay?
