Ohhh, I didn't read your entire post. In this context it means "land mines". The cattle ones are called cattle crossing guards.

Son minas quiebrapatas - leg breakers.

I like that sentence, very descriptive. Well if you look up 'quebrar' it is something like 'break' so 'break-feet' or a pretty darn rough path, right?
