The equivalent in English would be "Have a good night and sleep tight" or "Pleasant dreams". (Literally: "May you sleep with little angels")

.....and I suppose that would be in the future indicative not the subjunctive.....

It would still be subjunctive, Sally - because we are expressing a wish, a desire.

[I hope] that you sleep with the fishes/angels

[I want] you to sleep with fishes/angels

.....and so on. Tricky isn't it?

Edit (see Sally's comments below) .....

If we remove the "que" then it becomes an order:-

¡Duerme con los angelitos!

Think about - "Que tengas un buen día" This an indirect command. Of course we could say "Ten un buen día" (direct command) but I don't think people say this. I think the English equivalent is also an indirect command - we just use the same words. Or maybe I'm just thinking too much on a Sunday morning LOL

ok are you sure, because to me that's not a wish or desire, it's a promise, it's definitely going to happen...brrr - galsally, Jul 25, 2010
maybe if we omit the 'que'? - galsally, Jul 25, 2010

I've always loved the phrase "Que sueñes con los angelitos" Dream with the little angels. A friend of mine from Mexico used to say it and told me that his mother would always say that to him when he was a kid when he went to bed. "Que duermas con los angelitos" is the same thing just using "sleep" instead of "dream".

I was a little concerned that it might be like some Mafia threat, but I think they normally say with the fishes, not the little angels, and I suppose that would be in the future indicative not the subjunctive.....

Dormirás con los peces.... snake

Edited but may still be incorrect...
