camina and está caminando
What is the difference between la mujer camina and la mujer está caminando?
When would you use either of these correctly?
Thanks

Hello, and welcome to the forum. La mujer camina means "the woman walks." La mujer está caminando means "the woman is walking." However, the present and the present progressive are not used exactly the same way in Spanish as they are in English. Specifically, the first is used much more frequently in Spanish than in English. Unless you want to especially emphasize that a certain action is actively in progress, especially if you want to say that it was in progress when something else happened, the present tense is often used, not the present progressive. For example: "¿Dónde está mamá?" "Camina al supermercado." But: "Mamá estaba caminando al supermercado cuando se encontró con una amiga."
What is the difference between la mujer camina and la mujer está caminando?
La mujer camina (present indicative) = The woman walks, moves along, is walking, is moving along (but not necessarily at this very moment on these last two).
La mujer está caminando (progressive present). = (At this precise moment in time) The woman is walking or is moving along.
I hope that this helps.
