tuyo and suyo can be either long form possessive adjectives (for tu and su) or possessive pronouns (el tuyo, el suyo).

Es el libro suyo. (long form possessive adjective)

Es su libro.

It is your book. (formal) (or his or her book)

Es el libro tuyo.

Es tu libro.

It is your book. (informal)

Es el suyo. (pronoun...the el is dropped after Ser)

It is yours. (formal)

Es el tuyo.

It is yours. (informal)

Es la suya.

Es la tuya. (feminine versions)

Isn't it "es lo suyo"? - MeEncantanCarasSonrisas, Jul 23, 2010
No. "Es el suyo" or "es la suya" (depending on the noun in question) or, as Quentin said, "es suyo" / 'es tuyo' - samdie, Jul 23, 2010

Not only formal/informal

If you speak with a friend and question for a car:

¿Es tuyo este coche?

but if you think the car is for other person and you see that person:

¿Es suyo ese coche?

Good points, made, Kawalero and just to help you :we say 'ask' about a car (we don't use question here in English ) - FELIZ77, Jul 23, 2010
